An update from Defence Housing Australia on Lee Point

by DHA | Jul 14, 2023

Defence Housing Australia (DHA) remains committed to working with the Larrakia Nation on Lee Point.

DHA will continue to voluntarily stop clearing work at Lee Point, while cooperating with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), in regard to an application from Environmental Justice Australia seeking preservation and protection of the site on Aboriginal cultural heritage grounds.

DHA has obtained the necessary approvals, consents, permits, and other authorisations as required by Commonwealth and Northern Territory law, including clearance for the proposed development by the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority.

The Lee Point development will provide much needed housing for Defence families and the broader Darwin community.

About Lee Point

Defence Housing Australia (DHA) proposed development at Lee Point, located in Darwin's northern suburbs, is set to become a thriving residential community for Defence families, the local community and visitors to Darwin. Located just 17 kilometres from the CBD, Lee Point will offer seaside living while still being close to the city.

The proposed masterplanned community is spread across 131 hectares of zoned residential land and is proposed to accommodate 800 new homes, including detached houses, townhouses and apartments that will be delivered over the project’s lifespan.

It is envisaged that a Main Street precinct will offer a tourism activity centre containing restaurants, cafes, hotels, self-contained apartments and retail shops which will benefit from the close proximity to Lee Point and the Casuarina Coastal Reserve. A proposed community hub will be located in Muirhead North, and will include a primary school, child-care facility and sports facilities, covering approximately 3.7 hectares.
