16 October 2018 DHA staff step up to help our wounded warriors

DHA is proud to be an Official Supporter of the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, the world’s largest international sporting event that celebrates the achievements of wounded, injured and sick service personnel.

Four DHA staff members have been selected to be a part of the Invictus Games Volunteer Program. Ashleigh Wright, Shannon Byrnes, Hellynda Donnellan and Rachelle Robinson will each be generously donating their time before and during the days of competition and they say they can’t wait to get started!

DHA Financial Controller - Developments, Shannon Byrnes said the games provided a great opportunity to get out from behind the desk and reignite her passion for why she does this job by reconnecting directly with the Defence community.

‘My father was a RAAF pilot so I lived as part of the Defence community growing up, and even became an Air Force cadet myself as a teenager. This volunteering role is the least I can do to show my support and encouragement to my ADF family, mates and community,’ explained Shannon.

Having worked for DHA for more than 11 years, seven of those working directly with Defence members conducting posting and pre-deployment briefings, Development Business Manager, Ashleigh Wright said this is her chance to give back and support Defence members during their rehabilitation.

‘I am looking forward to seeing the best demonstration of resilience and inspiration, things we could all use a healthy dose of,’ said Ashleigh.

Volunteers are required to commit up-to 14 days, complete online and physical training, and may be rostered on five to ten shifts of six to 12 hours duration. Volunteer roles include venue set up, greeting people on arrival, checking tickets, assisting with medal ceremonies and providing general information and support to all games attendees.

The games will take place across Greater Sydney, including Sydney Olympic Park and around Sydney Harbour, from 20–27 October and will host up to 500 military athletes from 18 nations.
