Defence Housing Australia (DHA) has completed a successful expression of interest (EOI) process, awarding Renewable Homes with the contract for relocating 68 vacant properties in Aitkenvale, Townsville.

Renewable Homes intends to make the properties available for purchase on their website from May 29, 2026, for repurposed housing. The properties can provide buyers with an efficient and affordable way to secure housing, and will be a welcome injection into the constrained North Queensland housing market.

The EOI process sought industry interest from compliant parties to remove and relocate the 68 weatherboard properties, constructed in the 1960s, that no longer meet the standards or requirements for Defence housing.

Renewable Homes holds all required licensing to handle properties of this era and has significant experience in relocating properties in North Queensland.

DHA is preparing a new master plan for the river front site, which is expected to include a range of modern single dwelling, terrace and potentially low-rise apartment living. The master plan will be lodged with Townsville City Council later this year.

Renewable Homes will manage all logistics and responsibility associated with removal and relocation of the Aitkenvale properties.

Defence Housing Australia Managing Director Andrew Jaggers PSM

“DHA is thrilled to award North Queensland company Renewable Homes with the removal and relocation contract of our properties in Aitkenvale, following a rigorous procurement process.

“We hope that these properties can provide housing support for the broader region.

“We remain committed to meeting Defence housing requirements in the region, with the planned redevelopment of our Aitkenvale site supporting additional Australian Defence Force housing needs in the region.”

Renewable Homes Director Jo Veneman

“Our local team is thrilled to be awarded the contract by DHA to relocate 68 weatherboard properties from site in Aitkenvale for intended resale and reuse across North Queensland.

“These properties tick the boxes in multiple ways for first home buyers, parents and downsizers, and the affordability aspect can be a huge cost and social benefit.”
