The Northern Territory’s flagship Anzac Centenary event kicks off today; retracing the journey of Victoria Cross recipient Albert Borella to enlist in the First World War.

The Borella Ride will see Albert Borella’s grandson, Richard, lead the re-enactment as they retrace his journey from Tenant Creek to Darwin; first by foot, then horseback, and lastly by train.  DHA will be going along for the ride.

‘We are proud to be associated with The Borella Ride and the wider ADF community, during such an integral and important time in our history,’ said DHA Managing Director, Peter Howman.

‘By providing support vehicles for the near two week ride, we are helping to honour Albert Borella and keep his memory at the forefront of the community.

In 1915, Albert Borella journeyed through 1,000 km of the NT outback from Tennant Creek to Darwin to join up to fight in WW1. He fought at Gallipoli and the Western Front, was wounded, commissioned on the battlefield, and award the Victoria Cross, the highest honour for valour in combat.

DHA was born out of conflicts such as these. When it was recognised that the families of our servicemen and women needed to be better cared for during times of deployment. We are proud to be a part of the long and gallant history of the Defence forces in Australia and we will continue to serve Defence families for many years to come.
