Ipswich is located in South East Queensland. The city is located only 40 minutes drive from Brisbane and one hour from the Gold Coast and from the domestic and international air and sea ports.

Ipswich offers more than 40 state primary schools and seven state high schools. There are also more than 25 private schools and colleges. Of the combined schools, 47 offer pre-school. Ipswich has one university which is part of the University of Queensland and there are three TAFE colleges in the region. There are a range of child care facilities available in the Ipswich region. The Amberley Child Care Centre (funded by the Defence Community Organisation) is located adjacent to the RAAF base. Also located close to the base are the Amberley Community Preschool and Kindy, and the Amberley Playgroup.
