15 October 2018 The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide takes top national honours for sustainable design

Defence Housing Australia’s (DHA) residential development in Bowden South Australia, The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide, has taken home two prestigious industry awards at the 2018 Architecture and Design Sustainability Awards on Thursday 11 October.

DHA collaborated with the Prince’s Trust Australia and Renewal SA to create the mix of eight terraces and four apartments, with approximately 230 local trades and suppliers involved in the build process including local family-owned builder Palumbo.

At the national awards ceremony held in Sydney, The Prince’s Terrace received the Green Building of the Year and Multiple Dwelling awards in recognition of its innovative urban design and built form.

The Architecture and Design Sustainability Awards celebrate Australia’s most progressive buildings, spaces, people and building products that demonstrate innovative concepts, which reduce the ecological footprint of our built environment.

Brett Jorgensen, DHA General Manager, Property Provisioning Group said this latest award success is an outstanding achievement for DHA and its project partners and reinforces the project’s status as an Australian sustainable design pioneer.

‘The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide project is an example of how sustainable development can be achieved in the future,’ said Brett.

‘The finished product demonstrates energy efficiency, water efficiency, uses low carbon or sustainable materials and drastically reduced construction waste.

‘Through the clever integration of passive design principles, a flexible floorplan, foam ZEGO block construction and a reticulated recycled water system, we reduced energy consumption by 65 per cent and potable water usage by 55 per cent.

‘From inception, the project strived to create sustainable housing solutions that would support the health and wellbeing of residents.’

The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide has already received a number of prestigious accolades, including the Excellence in Sustainability Award at the recent 2018 Urban Developer awards. It was also the first residential project in the country to receive a ‘6 Star Green Star’ design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia and the first multi-unit complex to achieve a ‘6 Star Green Star As Built’ rating on completion, demonstrating that the finished structure has truly delivered on its visionary design.
