Award-winning developer Defence Housing Australia (DHA) was today joined by representatives from the Prince’s Trust and The Prince’s Charities Australia for a ceremonial bricklaying at DHA’s latest development in Bowden, South Australia.
DHA Chairman, the Hon. J.A.L. (Sandy) Macdonald, Prince’s Trust Chief Executive, Dame Martina Milburn DCVO CBE and The Prince’s Charities Australia Trustee and Project Leader, Dominic Richards, traded spots with the tradesmen to lay the first bricks at The Prince’s Terrace Adelaide. The bricks are more than 100-years-old and have been recycled from local buildings.
As the first residential project in Australia to achieve a 6 Star Green Star design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia, the project is committed to making sustainable choices and has a strong focus on local resources.
‘DHA is committed to creating local jobs where possible to stimulate local economic growth and employment’, Mr Macdonald said. ‘We see local jobs for local people as the first step in creating sustainable communities and great places to live.’
In addition to appointing family-owned company Palumbo to build the Terrace, DHA has also appointed local companies Tillett Natural Stone Industries and Historic Stone Restorations (HSR Australia Group). HSR will carve The Prince’s Feathers, a legacy from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, who launched the project in November 2015.
‘It is incredibly rewarding to see the progress of the build. It is a credit to our project partners that they have continued to reach development milestones despite the extreme weather conditions experienced in Adelaide over the summer’, said The Prince’s Charities Australia Trustee and Project Leader, Mr Richards.
With construction of the 12 dwellings scheduled to be completed in November 2017, the Terrace is rapidly taking shape with roof construction due to start in May. Palumbo has worked with design consultants, Dsquared Consulting, to ensure all building materials comply with Green Star criteria.
‘Energy efficient initiatives are in place to ensure the project is on track to achieve the prestigious Green Star – Design & As Built accreditation,’ Mr Macdonald said. ‘Energy use will be reduced by 51 per cent and greenhouse gas emissions will see a reduction of 55 per cent compared to a standard home. In addition, the project waste contractors are aiming for 95 per cent of all waste on site to be recycled, surpassing the management plan objective of 90 per cent.’
