For the second consecutive year Defence Housing Australia (DHA) has been recognised at the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) - Northern Territory (NT) gala awards, with the Asche Duplex named for excellence and innovation.
Located in DHA’s award-winning development, Breezes Muirhead, the Asche Duplex was conceived as a prototype home to explore options for developing environmentally sustainable housing at an affordable price.
In 2015, DHA engaged Troppo Architects and leading builders PTM Group to deliver this innovative development that set the benchmark for sustainably compact housing within the Darwin market.
The Asche Duplex sits on a 675 square metre corner lot without compromising on quality, liveability or style. Wide opening doors integrate the living spaces to create an adaptable floor plan that adjusts to individual needs.
A downstairs day-bed area provides a cool place for resting, which easily transitions into an additional room for guests. Upstairs, two large bedrooms with louvered windows and high ceilings offer both a functional yet aesthetically pleasing space.
The benefits of this innovative home are numerous. Families can enjoy a healthier living environment as a result of increased airflow as well as lower than average running costs.
The orientation of the floorplan, combined with locally sourced sustainable materials, optimise the impact of the coastal breezes and allow for natural cooling.
The design took into account all aspects of delivering a sustainable home, from the materials used, to the impact the dwelling has on the environment. This approach was taken to ensure a significant reduction in waste, transport and excavation. The home also boasts a 6.5 star rating from the Nationwide Housing Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS).

This is the second year in a row that DHA has been recognised by UDIA NT for outstanding achievements within the NT. Last year, it was the northern suburbs community development, Breezes Muirhead, taking top honours for both Masterplanned Community and Environmental Excellence.
