19 February 2016 Growing success in the Top End

A Defence Housing Australia (DHA) sponsored program established in the Northern Territory (NT) continues to provide a pathway to qualifications for Indigenous people.

The Breezes Muirhead Indigenous Training Program was established in mid 2013 by DHA in partnership with Greening Australia NT (GANT).

The program assists unemployed Indigenous individuals within the NT to find long-term employment opportunities, with trainees working to achieve a Certificate 1 in Conservation and Land Management.

This collaboration also ensures the protection of environmental heritage at Breezes Muirhead, DHA’s leading NT development, by employing a vulnerable species collection and relocation program.

New students were excited to commence their 22-week training course this week and will study a range of units to build an understanding of natural resource management.

Students will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the Breezes Muirhead community, local residents and schools throughout their studies to share their knowledge and skills.

We would like to congratulate recent graduates Brett Baxter, David Shepherd, Russell Williams and Patrick Foster-Barker who graduated from the program on 22 December 2015 under the guidance of experienced GANT trainer Yvette Brady.

Trainees from past programs have gone on to great success and are involved in a wide range of community initiatives such as revegetation programs, organisation and coordination of NAIDOC week or undertaking further studies to grow their skills in natural resource management.
