A contingent of DHA Board members and staff gathered on the steps of the Sydney Opera House to watch 18 nations join together in a celebration of strength in the face of adversity, endurance and pure determination against all odds.
From the moment the bagpipes rang out with the iconic John Farnham tune, You’re the Voice, to His Royal Highness the Duke of Sussex encouraging all Australians to get behind the Games, every moment was truly exhilarating.
‘I’ve got a mission for all you Aussies, and it’s not to throw some shrimp on the barbie. Our competitors have made it to these Games. Most of them travelling from many thousands of miles away. It’s your job to cheer them on and share their stories, it’s your job to watch in the stands with your friends and families around the television. Be inspired, allow the examples of service and determination you all see to change something big or small in your own lives. Show the world what ‘Game On Down Under’ really means,’ The Duke of Sussex said.
Several Games athletes were interviewed during the ceremony, which was broadcast live on ABC, speaking about their personal journey to the Games. Each spoke of how sport had played a role in their recovery and the impact the Games had on not only them but their loved ones.
