Albury-Wodonga is often said in one breath as if it is the name of a town. In fact Albury and Wodonga are two separate cities divided by the Murray River and the NSW and Victorian border.

As they are only 7kms apart, the two cities have formed a close relationship and formed a region. Albury, on the NSW side, is 567 kms southwest of Sydney and has a population of nearly 45,000. Wodonga has a smaller population of approximately 35,000. Despite having their own city councils, Albury and Wodonga share many social and educational services, infrastructure and business opportunities.

Like many areas away from the capital cities, sport plays an important role in the lives of those living in the region. Wodonga has the largest tennis complex in the southern hemisphere and the annual Albury Festival of Sport is held in February and March. The Albury Show, the Bonegilla Festival, the Wodonga Show and the Albury-Wodonga Wine and Food Festival all showcase the produce and livestock that thrive in the region.

Within Albury and Wodonga there is a good bus network and trains as well as coaches provide services within Victoria and NSW there are also aerial services to take you further a field. People who move to the area are delighted by the ease that one can move around by car.

DHA manages approximately 300 properties in the Albury/Wodonga region. The vast majority of these are on the Victorian side in Wodonga. Due to the amount of space available in Wodonga, most houses are one story freestanding brick dwellings with back yards but there are also a small number of units.

As Albury/Wodonga experiences all four seasons and is particularly cold in winter due to it being only a one hour drive to the Victorian snowfields of Falls Creek, heating is provided in all DHA managed houses. The service residences on-base at Bonegilla have wood fires and electric heating, most other houses have gas heating. In summer it is not uncommon to reach 40 C. Therefore, all DHA managed houses have evaporative airconditioning.
