Information about Hobart
There is a reason why so many Australians and tourists visit Tasmania - for its charm and beauty. The diversity of landscapes and activities is almost unparalleled in Australia. Hobart, the capital, is located down south on the Derwent River and Launceston is just under the eastern most point of the State.
Hobart is the second oldest Australian capital and many of its historic sandstone buildings are still in use. The city's 129,000 residents enjoy the river harbour, the mountain vistas and the parks throughout the area. The weekly Salamanca Place Markets sell crafts, antiques and vegetables each Saturday morning in the open air.
DHA manages just over 70 properties in Tasmania, with the vast majority of these in the Hobart area. Several homes are also available in Launceston and Devonport. The main suburb areas in Hobart are Kingston, Brighton and Blackman's Bay. DHA's properties tend to be located close to Defence establishments, particularly in Dowsing Point. All homes have either wood fire, gas or electric heating systems. Locals say that all four seasons can occur in one day, so there are certainly climate variations. Summers tend to be dry and hot but not humid. Despite having snow on mountain peaks in winter, Tasmania does not have a high rainfall.
