Introduction

Alice Springs is the second largest town in the Northern Territory outside of the Darwin/Palmerston metropolitan area.

"The Alice", as it is known, is located in the geographic centre of Australia and is a popular tourist destination. From Alice Springs you can explore the beautiful MacDonnell Ranges, Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) and many spectacular gorges and waterholes. Housing

Defence Housing Australia (DHA) manages approximately 50 properties in Alice Springs and aims to increase this number to 60 through a targeted acquisition program.

These houses are well located housing including both detached homes and townhouse style accommodation. A large proportion of DHA houses are situated within the golf course estate to the south-east of the CBD.

Alice Springs also services the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap.

Alice Springs is well serviced by international and domestic air services as well as rail and road infrastructure.

Alice Springs has all the modern conveniences including shopping centres, restaurants, cafes, a casino and conference centre. There are venues and facilities for a wide range of sporting, community and cultural activities.

Climate

Alice Springs climate is one of extremes with hot summers and cold winters. Summer maximums range between the high 30's and 45 ° C. In winter the night time temperature can drop below 0 ° C with pleasant daytime temperatures in the low twenties.

Education

Alice Springs offers a wide range of primary, secondary and tertiary education opportunities, with nineteen government (public) and non-government (private) schools/colleges, including two dedicated to Indigenous students, and seven pre-schools.

Most of the non-government schools are operated by Christian church organisations providing education in the context of a religious direction. Higher education and employment opportunities are enabling students to fully complete their studies in Alice Springs and put their skills to work here.

Local Community and its People

The Arrernte people are the traditional owners of the area and approximately 20% of the Alice Springs population is Aboriginal. The remainder of the population is comprised of diverse cultures from around the world. There is also a large American presence in the town as a result of the joint defence facility at Pine Gap.
