Defence houses completed in Cairns
This week five Defence houses being constructed in Cairns as part of the Nation Building- Economic Stimulus Plan have been completed. The construction of the houses attracted plenty of local media interest in September last year when Mr Jim Turnour, Federal Member for Leichhardt and Queensland Senator Jan McLucas visited the site.
At the time, Mr Turnour commented on the high levels of unemployment in Cairns and the importance of projects such as this.
Local builders, Value Homes, were employed to construct the five homes and encouraged to source local sub-contractors and suppliers in support of the Cairns economy.
The total project cost $1.2 million and is part of the $245.58 million allocated to build 802 Defence houses around Australia. Due to program efficiencies Defence Housing Australia will now be delivering an additional 27 houses bringing the total to 829 expected to be completed by March 2011.
