Prime Minister Gillard visits Larrakeyah

While on a tour of the Northern Territory recently, Prime Minister Julia Gillard attended DHA’s construction site at Larrakeyah.

The Prime Minister arrived at the site, where she met with DHA’s Managing Director, Michael Del Gigante, to talk about the work that was taking place. Michael showed Ms Gillard the plans for the 97 tropical style houses that are currently being built and explained the benefits that the climate appropriate housing will provide our Defence members.

After looking at the housing plans, the Prime Minister took some time to walk through the construction site to see how the houses were progressing. She stopped along the way to speak to a handful of builders at work and asked about the innovative style of building they were working on.

The proximity of the ocean and the view from the site was something that appeared to impress the Prime Minister, commenting that future residents ‘were very lucky, few people have a view like that.’

Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, Warren Snowdon, was also in attendance on the day. He was happy to show the Prime Minister ‘the great job’ that DHA were doing and that he thought the quality of the housing was ‘outstanding’.

The housing project at Larrakeyah Barracks will deliver 97 new houses, architecturally designed for the tropical climate which will help accommodate the growing Defence population in the Top End.
