New homes for Blackburn

Defence Housing Australia has five new homes for Defence families, after construction finished in Blackburn in November.

The new three-bedroom homes were redeveloped at John Holland Court. Despite the three original homes at the site being ideally located, they no longer met Defence housing needs, and were marked for disposal.

DHA staff saw this as a unique opportunity to redevelop an existing site — something DHA has not done before in Victoria — with the new homes now providing for Defence families for years to come.

Now complete, the five new freestanding townhouses were architecturally designed by Studio 35. The homes, built to a six star House Energy Rating, feature solar passive design to keep in the warmth in winter, and take advantage of the breeze in summer months.

The design took advantage of the mature trees surrounding the homes to provide an established landscape. Designers also incorporated a colour palette that was sympathetic to local characteristics, in order to maintain the community feel.

Families will be less than a kilometre from local shopping and the Blackburn High School and just 17 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD. The spot also offers excellent recreational opportunities like the Cootamundra walking tracks, which are just a short walk away.
